The joyful, danceable samba-funk sounds of Diogo Ramos are coming to the oTH stage! Ramos is a Brazilian singer-songwriter living in Montreal. He has been working professionally for 25 years as a music producer, releasing 20 albums between composition and production.
After successfully touring in Canada, South America and Europe in 2019 with his album Samba sans frontières, he now presents Raro Efeito, a vibrant mix of samba-funk fused with electro-hip-hop, all produced by Boogàt.
The title song, Raro Efeito, is a prayer of hope to the people of Brazil, where the artist denounces the ongoing genocide in his native country. In Gamela, the text transports us through dance and “baião de dois” (typical dish of northeastern Brazilian cuisine). The piece Samba do Boncy, written in collaboration with Bïa, Imposs and Boogát, is a musical political act and a well-deserved tribute to the music journalist Ralph Boncy, who greatly contributed to artistic multiculturalism in Montreal. Sua Mão Direita celebrates this encounter between Diogo Ramos’ samba and Boogát’s electro Hip-Hop, interweaving Portuguese and Spanish lyrics that make you want to dance, baptizing you with the essence of the beach.
Raro Efeito includes horn arrangements by João Lenhari, and vocal arrangements by Bianca Rocha and Flavia Nascimento. The mix was done by Jean Massicotte in Montreal and Andrés Oddone in Mexico.
A recipient of the Council of Arts and Letters of Quebec (CALQ) Research and Creation Fellowship 2021 and 2017, Ramos also received the Montreal Arts Council’s Coup de Coeur award in 2020, and MAtv’s Coup de Coeur award at the 2022 and 2017 MUZ Festival (Vision Diversity) – a tribute to world music in Montreal. Diogo received the 2019 Cumplices award from MAI (Montréal Arts Interculturels). He was winner of the Vinicius de Moraes Prize, at 16 years as a performing guitarist.
Now, in 2023, he launches his new album, Cabaça, a new concept, mixing samba funk and electro-hip-hop in collaboration with a diversity of artists.
Cutoff is Saturday, March 25, 2023 6:29 pm EDT unless it sells out earlier.
