Zaphod Beeblebrox—often simply called Zaphod's—was one of Ottawa's most legendary live music venues and nightclubs, located in the ByWard Market at 27 York Street. Named after the eccentric, two-headed character from Douglas Adams's The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, the club embraced a quirky, alternative spirit that made it stand out in Canada's nightlife scene. Originally opened in 1989 by Eugene Haslam, Zaphod's quickly became a hub for indie bands, electronic music, and touring acts. It was famous for its eclectic concerts, DJ nights, and even "Live 88.5 Big Money Shot" competitions, which helped launch local talent. Beyond live music, it built a reputation for its unique cocktails, space-themed atmosphere, and inclusive vibe, making it a cultural cornerstone for Ottawa's creative community. Sadly, the venue closed its doors on May 14, 2017, marking the end of an era for the city's music scene. For many, Zaphod Beeblebrox remains synonymous with Ottawa's alternative identity, a place where artists and audiences collided in unforgettable ways.
