The Laramie Project is a 2000 American play by Moisés Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater about the reaction to the 1998 murder of gay University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard in Laramie, Wyoming. The murder was denounced as a hate crime and brought attention to the lack of hate crime laws in various states, including Wyoming.
An example of verbatim theatre, The Laramie Project is drawn from hundreds of interviews conducted by the theatre company with citizens of the town, the company members' own journal entries, and published news reports. Eight actors portray more than sixty characters in a series of short scenes to give a vivid and thoughtful portrayal of a town confronting its own values.
This production is a staged reading, and features an all-star cast: Marion Adler, Christopher Blake, Lauren Bowler, Peggy Coffey, Michelle Giroux, Robert King, Michael Neale and Andrew Pogson. (Cast is subject to change.) Music/Sound by Keith Thomas, and direction by Ron Dodson. A talkback session will follow each reading.
Warning: This production is based on a true story and explores themes which some audience members may find triggering, including homophobia, mature language, hate speech and hate crime, prejudice and intolerance, death, violence, kidnapping, torture and murder. Recommended for ages 14 and older.
