Basel Zaraa is a UK-based Palestinian artist whose work weaves together installation, sound, and performance to create deeply immersive, sensory experiences that bring audiences closer to the lived realities of exile, displacement, and resilience. Born and raised in the Yarmouk refugee camp in Syria after his grandparents were forced from Palestine in 1948, Zaraa carries forward stories shaped by survival, memory, and the search for identity, grounding his practice in both personal history and collective struggle. Since moving to the United Kingdom in 2010, he has developed internationally acclaimed projects including Dear Laila, an installation created for his daughter that reconstructs fragments of his childhood in Yarmouk, and As Far As My Fingertips Take Me, a collaboration with Tania El Khoury that earned the Bessie Award in 2019 and has toured across five continents. His most recent installation, What Will We Do Without Exile?, transforms a refugee tent into an imaginative landscape of resistance, drawing on stories of Palestinian perseverance. Through his art, Zaraa reclaims space for memory, imagination, and freedom against the backdrop of displacement.
