About Futaba Niekawa

Futaba Niekawa is a Japanese-born classical pianist known for her expressive performances as both a soloist and collaborative chamber musician. Educated at the prestigious Eastman School of Music, where she earned advanced degrees in piano performance, Niekawa developed a reputation for refined technique and interpretive sensitivity across a wide-ranging classical and contemporary repertoire. She has performed internationally in recital and chamber music settings, collaborating with string players and vocalists while championing modern compositions alongside traditional works. Niekawa is a founding member of duo526, a violin–piano ensemble established with violinist Kerry DuWors that explores both standard repertoire and new music. In 2025 she joined the faculty of the University of Maryland School of Music as an assistant professor of piano, where she teaches performance and chamber music while maintaining an active concert schedule. Her recordings include appearances on contemporary classical releases such as Shifting Colors on the Slant, demonstrating her commitment to innovative repertoire and collaborative artistry within the international classical music community.
