Guy Davis (born May 12, 1952) is a renowned American blues guitarist, banjo player, singer, songwriter, actor, and storyteller, widely celebrated as a two-time Grammy Award nominee and often called the “Ambassador of the Blues” for his dedication to preserving and evolving traditional blues music. The only son of legendary actors Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee, he grew up surrounded by the performing arts and African-American cultural history, which deeply shapes his music. Davis’s performances combine emotive storytelling with virtuosic guitar and banjo skills, drawing from Delta blues, folk, and gospel traditions, creating a sound that is both authentic and contemporary. He has released numerous albums, including Be Ready When I Call You (2021), The Legend of Sugarbelly (2024), and Sonny & Brownie’s Last Train (2017), and regularly tours across North America and internationally, bringing the rich history of blues to audiences worldwide. Beyond music, Davis has acted in films such as Beat Street (1984) and Def by Temptation (1990) and continues to inspire through his storytelling, educational work, and commitment to the preservation of African-American musical heritage.
