Maria Colonescu is a Romanian-born, Canadian-based theatre and film creator recognized for her multidisciplinary work as a writer, performer, director, producer, and designer. A graduate of the University of Greenwich with a BA in Drama and Creative Writing, she also holds an MFA in Advanced Theatre Practice from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. Colonescu co-founded Aequilux Productions in 2016, developing original, socially conscious works that explore identity, displacement, memory, and the psychological edges of human experience. Active for more than fifteen years, she has contributed to independent theatre festivals and fringe circuits across Ontario and Alberta, and previously served as Vice President of the Alberta Playwrights' Network. Her screen credits include Autumn’s Lane (2016), The Explorer (2016), and A Daughter’s Journey (2018), while stage works such as The Companion (2024) reflect her interest in intimate, character-driven storytelling. Known for blending theatrical experimentation with cultural heritage, including Romanian influences, Colonescu continues to develop original productions that bridge performance, narrative, and community engagement within Canada’s independent arts landscape.
