The Men of the Deeps are a unique and historic male choral ensemble hailing from Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, composed entirely of former and working coal miners. Founded in 1966 through the vision of Nina Cohen, the choir combines a deep connection to the mining community with a passion for preserving and performing traditional and contemporary folk music, creating a powerful cultural and musical legacy. Each member must have at least two years of experience working in or around a coal mine, ensuring that their performances carry an authenticity and lived experience that is rare in choral music. Over the decades, the choir has performed across Canada and internationally, serving as cultural ambassadors and sharing stories of mining life, resilience, and camaraderie through song. Their repertoire includes mining songs, folk ballads, and original compositions that celebrate Cape Breton heritage, while albums like Diamonds in the Rough and 40 Years Young document their rich musical journey. The Men of the Deeps continue to honor the traditions of coal miners while inspiring audiences with their moving harmonies and heartfelt storytelling.
