Walter Borden CM ONS (born July 20, 1942) is a trailblazing Canadian actor, poet, and playwright whose career has spanned more than five decades, leaving an enduring impact on Canadian theatre and culture. Originally from New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, Borden became one of the first African Canadian actors to achieve national recognition on stage and screen, breaking barriers for generations to follow. His celebrated play Tightrope Time—most recently revived as The Last Epistle of Tightrope Time at Toronto's Tarragon Theatre in 2023—remains a landmark exploration of identity, resilience, queerness, and Black Canadian experience. Over the years, he has appeared in theatres across the country, including the Stratford Festival, and in film and television, earning wide acclaim for his commanding presence and lyrical voice. Honoured as a Member of the Order of Canada and the Order of Nova Scotia, Walter Borden continues to inspire audiences in Toronto and beyond with his artistry, activism, and uncompromising vision.
