Have you always wondered how cinema critics write their reviews? If you are interested in criticism and how to go about crafting concise, hard-hitting commentary, Film Critic Rachel Ho from The Asian Cut is here to help you understand what goes into writing a good film critique.
Please note that this session is structured as a hands-on workshop around film criticism. Participants will have the opportunity to write KCFF capsule film reviews for publication on The Asian Cut site.
This workshop is presented in partnership with The Asian Cut.
Rachel Ho is a freelance film critic, editor, and writer. She is currently the film editor at Exclaim! Magazine and co-founder of The Asian Cut. Her work has been published in The Globe and Mail, CBC Arts, Slash Film, POV Magazine, eliteGen Magazine, among others. Rachel is a member of the Toronto Film Critics Association and won their Emerging Critic Award in 2021. She has also been an international voter for the Golden Globe Awards since 2022.
The Asian Cut was created in 2022 out of a desire to see more films from Asia and the Asian diaspora represented in the Western film discourse in a thoughtful and authentic manner. The site's founders, Alisha Mughal and Rachel Ho, became acquainted as writers for Exclaim! Magazine and quickly bonded over a love of coffee and long-form writing. Rose Ho and Jericho Tadeo later joined the team, completing the TAC quartet.
The four writers decided to be the change they wanted to see in the film world, and so created a space to not only highlight Asian and Asian diaspora films, but showcase filmmakers of Asian descent. The goal is for the website to be a place for Asian journalists and film critics (those established and those just starting out) to write about the films, filmmakers and film history that they feel connected to.
