Smithsonian Institution Building, more commonly known as the Smithsonian Castle, is the original and oldest building of the Smithsonian Institution, located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Completed in 1855 and designed by architect James Renwick Jr., the red Seneca sandstone structure is a striking example of Gothic Revival architecture, featuring towers, arched windows, and medieval-inspired detailing that distinguish it from surrounding federal buildings. Constructed between 1847 and 1855, the Castle was built to house the newly established Smithsonian Institution, which was founded with funds bequeathed by British scientist James Smithson. Over time, the building has served multiple roles, including museum space, research facility, and administrative headquarters. In recent decades, it has functioned primarily as the Smithsonian's visitor center and administrative offices, offering orientation services for the institution's network of museums and galleries. In February 2023, the Castle closed for its first major renovation in more than 50 years, a comprehensive project intended to modernize infrastructure, improve accessibility, and preserve the historic landmark for future generations.
