About Dan Santat

Dan Santat (born October 2, 1975, in Brooklyn, New York) is a Caldecott Medal–winning American author and illustrator whose dynamic, emotionally resonant artwork has made him one of the most influential figures in contemporary children’s literature. Raised in Southern California and a graduate of the ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, Santat first built a career as a commercial illustrator before creating the Disney Channel animated series The Replacements. He achieved widespread acclaim with The Adventures of Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend (2014), which won the 2015 Caldecott Medal for distinguished illustration. His memoir-style graphic novel A First Time for Everything (2023) earned the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature, showcasing his ability to blend humor, vulnerability, and expressive visual storytelling. Santat has written and illustrated more than 60 books, including After the Fall (How Humpty Dumpty Got Back Up Again), Drawn Together, The Aquanaut, and collaborations such as Don’t Trust Fish with Neil Sharpson. Known for kinetic linework, cinematic composition, and heartfelt themes of resilience and belonging, Santat lives in California with his family.
