Lincoln Peirce (born October 23, 1963) is an American cartoonist, animator, and children’s author best known for creating the long-running comic strip Big Nate, which debuted in 1991 and grew into a bestselling series of illustrated novels and graphic collections for young readers. Raised in Durham, New Hampshire and born in Ames, Iowa, Peirce developed his drawing skills early and later studied art at Colby College and Brooklyn College before pursuing cartooning professionally. His work centers on the misadventures of Nate Wright, a confident but trouble-prone middle-school student whose school life, friendships, and rivalries form the core of the series’ humor. The success of Big Nate led to dozens of books translated into multiple languages and an animated adaptation, as well as Peirce’s later fantasy-comedy series Max and the Midknights. Known for his expressive linework and relatable school-based storytelling, Peirce is considered one of the leading contemporary creators of illustrated children’s fiction, often mentioned alongside authors such as Jeff Kinney and Dav Pilkey, whose works helped popularize modern kid-focused graphic novels.
