About Susan Swan

Susan Swan is a celebrated Canadian author, journalist, and educator whose influence on Canadian literature spans decades. Born in 1945 in Midland, Ontario, Swan developed a lifelong passion for writing, beginning with diaries that captured her ambitions, thoughts, and observations from a young age. She went on to study English literature at McGill University, laying the foundation for a career that would see her fiction published in over 20 countries and translated into ten languages, earning her a lasting place among Canada’s literary elite. Swan’s work often explores themes of identity, adolescence, gender, and social dynamics, with notable novels such as The Wives of Bath, The Biggest Modern Woman of the World, The Western Light, and The Dead Celebrities Club. In addition to her fiction, Swan has published non-fiction, including her 2025 memoir Big Girls Don’t Cry, which reflects on midlife, personal growth, and embracing one’s full self, showcasing her candid, thoughtful voice. A professor emerita at York University, Swan has also co-founded the Carol Shields Prize for Fiction, contributing significantly to nurturing Canadian literary talent and promoting feminist perspectives, while continuing to engage audiences with readings, panels, and literary events across the country, solidifying her status as a vital figure in contemporary Canadian literature.
