Armed with just some acoustic guitars, a piano and a bunch of songs and stories, RPR Up Close, Acoustic & Personal arose after doing some all-acoustic workshops at Summerfolk back in 2022 followed by a couple of intimate concerts which featured songs and road stories from the various band members’ experiences touring as Tanglefoot, RPR and various other touring acts. The evening also features the odd ‘cover’ song that pays tribute to the influences that first inspired each of us to get into musical touring life in the first place. The shows are loose in format - the band is even open to straying from set lists to take the odd request. The song delivery however is nevertheless tight in musicianship and, most importantly, in vocal power with RPR’s trademark robust lead vocals and full harmonies on display.
RPR is Steve Ritchie (vocals, guitar); Al Parrish (vocals, bass) and Rob Ritchie (vocals, piano). Running the spectrum from stirring anthems to whisper-gentle ballads, RPR’s songs evoke joy, tears and laughter with a dynamic tapestry of musical styles.
Together since 2012, RPR have regularly played throughout Canada and the US, as well as three UK tours to date. Appearing on festival stages, concert series, music halls, theatres, town halls and beyond, RPR continue to win new fans along the way. The band has released two CDs, Trans Atlantic in 2013 and the latest, Longview, that was nominated for Blues and Roots Radio 2019 Album of the Year. It features twelve songs that showcase the band’s songwriting and musicianship like never before. You’ll hear about hoodoos, bones, shopkeepers, drunk sharks, stick-figure families, crop-dusting, gratitude, tragedy, Thessalon, fire, guns, hurricanes, tearing down the wall, and lots of hair.
"I haven't heard harmonies that strong in years" - Valdy @ Canterbury Folk Festival 2019
"Gorgeous harmonies [that] make the hair on the back of your neck stand up. These are songs that inevitably leave you speechless ... they are all gifted songwriters" - Roots Music Canada 2018
