AVA MENDOZA (bandcamp)
Brooklyn based guitarist Ava Mendoza comes to Toronto behind her 2nd solo album "The Circular Train". A versatile and virtuosic voice in the avant garde world Mendoza has collaborated with Carla Bozulich, Fred Frith, Malcolm Mooney, Mike Watt, Nels Cline, John Zorn & most recently as part of Bill Orcutt's Guitar Quartet. Her solo work sees her move through avant rock inspired slow blues rippers that weave and meander with an expressive heaviness. Guitar notes come adorned with a garnish of distortion that hovers in the air like settling dust. The songs never just sit in one world. Moving from avant jazz ponderings to more raw blistered noise rock textures without ever losing the continuity in Ava's casual yet confident voicings. Her music is familiar yet adventurous at the same time!
FRESH SNOW (bandcamp)
Toronto experimental rock quartet Fresh Snow return to the live arena, and we are psyched to have them back! Undying synth lines and guitar fuzz merge into one vibrating beast driven by a drum beat locked into the warbling distortion. Tense tones constantly move forward the humming, buzzing, clattering structure that is Fresh Snow. Rough guitar notes cut through pulsating fuzz to converse with formless electronics. Hard psych noodling becomes a backdrop for groove repetition. Hints of jangle pop dig themselves out of a squealing wall of sound. Don't miss the re-birth of this krautrock influenced crew and their newest jams!
NOT THE WIND, NOT THE FLAG (bandcamp)
Colin Fisher & Brandon Valdivia’s genre spanning free improv. duo returns as they gear up for some new recordings. These longtime collaborators draw inspiration from psych, jazz, noise, tradition musics and their own brotherly connectivity. Colin & Brandon build familiar structures in an improvised setting, moving from gentle kalimba noodlings over impatient drums to growing walls of space psych guitar noise only to deconstruct it again into a whisper of bells and gongs. Surreal sax swirls refract over electronic percussion. One of the most versatile & unsung acts in the city resurfaces for yet another cosmic mutation in the life cycle of an ever evolving sonic language.
