The winner of the Best Local Short at KCFF23, Kingston-based filmmaker, writer and artist Naomi Okabe returns to the festival with another finely nuanced work. A look at the challenges of balancing life and work -- and of finding meaning in both – Okabe’s new medium-length documentary introduces viewers to six people who have bucked societal preconceptions and challenged gender stereotypes in the ways they’ve chosen to serve their families and their communities. Delving deep into the lives of subjects who include a beekeeper, an educator, a flower farmer and a cattle breeder, Okabe generously offers viewers a wealth of insights.
This screening will be preceded by a screening of DRY LAND:
With her new short, Jennifer Law-Smith uses serene harbourfront views to emphasize the contrasts between different forms of life existing side by side. By doing so, she quietly and precisely explores themes of interior and exterior space, along with the many meanings of solitude. Part of Law-Smith’s inspiration was a family relative who worked as a psychologist in the prison seen in this film, which serves as a unique visual study of Kingston.
