NADJA (bandcamp)
Nadja is a duo of Aidan Baker and Leah Buckareff—active since 2005—making music which has been variuosly described as ambient doom, dreamsludge, or metalgaze, a signature sound which combines the atmospheric textures of shoegaze, ambient, and electronic music with the heaviness and volume of metal, noise, and industrial music. Using electric guitars and a drum machine, the duo creates layered, dense, atmospheric music which juxtaposes melody and noise and demands the listener's attention as much as it embraces them within an immersive sonic environment. Born in Toronto but now based in Berlin, Nadja return home to celebrate the band's 20th anniversary that has seen the duo release over 20 albums, not to mention various collaborations.
Toronto experimental doom metal trio of Lucas Gadke (Blood Ceremony), Laura C. Bates and Justin Ruppel celebrate the release of their newest collaborative album "Breathless Spirit" with experimental producer Cares. Known for borrowing and mixing elements of free jazz, post rock, black metal, and folk musics through the obliterating lens of doom metal, Volur & Cares' newest outing sees them continue down this genre defying trajectory. They merge distorted strings with thundering percussion, as hard treble screeches out over crushing bass, and blood curdling vocals. Thundering silences give way to whispering distortion, melodic folk inspired passages, and destructive riffs dripping with blistered noise residue. "Breathless Spirit" finds Volur tackling the supernatural lore of 13th century Icelandic text, The Saga of Grettir the Strong, a fitting tale for their moody drones, ripped riffage, waves of avant textures and ethereal hymns.
Seriously heavy double header!!
