For the past 30 years, Toronto's Picastro has been evolving an intense and idiosyncratic variant of indie rock songcraft, embracing unique instrumentation, unsettling dissonance, and an ultra-personal approach to form and dynamics along the way. The vision of vocalist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist Liz Hysen has anchored the project's sound throughout these three decades. Picastro celebrates the release of “Double On Time” out now on We Are Busy Bodies. Inspired by Hysen’s own boxing journey and the murky life of 1962 World Heavyweight Champion Sonny Liston. Mangled samples, a new piece of the Picastro tool kit, lurk in the undercurrents of these latest explorations.

BERNICE (bandcamp)

Toronto avant soul power trio of Robin Dann, Thom Gill, and Phil Melanson create off kilter songs that find themselves encapsulating the beautiful smoothness of R&B without any of the traditional trappings. They dance somewhere between the airy syrup of ambient jazz fusion, sparse jabs of musique concrete, and neo-soul accents. These career jokers pull out the electronic beats that pop, slurp, slide & sizzle as Robin's vocals hover over top is a mystic cloud of angelic synth tones. An elegantly sparse cacophony of glitched samples and side line whispers notate their musical world. All of this boiled down into your favourite avant pop jams.

Jason Bhattacharya is a multi-dimensional creative whose main focus is production, songwriting & recording. Bhattacharya has been featured on umpteen records as a session musician & producer and creates solo works under the pseudonym Granny Smith. His work has been featured in ads by Chanel, Bulgari, Vogue, Dior, Purple Magazine & many more.
