Summer Pantry, the second event in the Don’t Jump to Recipe series which premiered in March, is a unique immersive theatre experience presented in the form of a cooking class at the Kitchener Market Kitchen. Creator/performer Hiyam Mahrat will teach traditional Syrian cooking as part of a full-fledged theatrical performance.
Hiyam remembers her grandmother’s pantry, at her house in Syria. Summer visits as a child meant opportunities to explore all the jars on the shelves, covered in light dust and mystery, welcoming her home. The colourful contents of the jars, the smell of mahshi in the kitchen, and a love of eggplants built into her genes and carried across the ocean to Kitchener, ON. Now, those days live on only in memory, the stories carefully preserved, but Hiyam will be taking them off the shelf to share them with her guests at the show.
Audiences can choose one of two ways of engaging with the production:
The "participant" ticket is for those who want to be involved in the actual cooking of the dishes and fully partake in the meal, with the choice to take home any leftover food (please bring your own containers!).
The "spectator" ticket is a less involved experience, for those who do not want to participate in the cooking aspect. While "spectators" will have the opportunity to try some of the food, these tickets are for a more limited offering.
Both ticket options are available on a sliding scale.
Cash only tickets available for purchase at the door.
Light refreshments will be offered at the start of the show.
Some of the food cooked will be suitable for vegetarians, but the dish will contain both nuts and gluten.
